"Like pulling teeth" is how most families of a child with Sensory Integration Dysfunction describe everyday activities their children find unenjoyableWe take for granted the ability to eat a variety of foods, brush our teeth calmly, and give and receive hugs from our friends and family.  Sensory Integration Dysfunction can limit a child's food preferences, restrict play opportunities, and delay social skill development.  Sensory Integration Dysfunction interrupts a child's ability to correctly process, categorize, and appropriately respond to the perception of an internal cue or environmental stimulus.  Hair clippers may sound like a lawn mower, making a trip to the barber an adventure.  Foods of a certain color or texture may activate a sensitive gag reflex.  Collars, sleeves, and furniture may become riddled with bite marks.  Clothing tags and unexpected touches can feel irritating, painful, or threatening.

Youthcentrix therapists  work with children with Sensory Integration Dysfunction.  We educate families on individualized and appropriate strategies to help children develop adaptive and appropriate responses to everyday stimuli.  We help to increase the list of everyday experiences children with Sensory Integration Dysfunction find tolerable, if not enjoyable.
